  34. I am very pleased to introduce my-self and our GONDWANA project devoted --
  35. for its major objective -- to develop electronic networing among African
  36. scientists especially working in the fields of sustainable agriculture and
  37. forestry.
  38.  
  39. I have a scientifical background in ecology (Ph. D. in Sciences at the
  40. Universite Catholique de Louvain, Belgium) and extensive experience in
  41. computer & telecommunication.
  42.  
  43. =46or the launching of the GONDWANA project, I will travel through N-E, E & =
  44. S
  45. Africa with my girl friend Petra Vandecasteele (reporter) for one year.

  47. What do we need from you?
  48.  
  49. One of the challenges of the expedition is to stay in permanent contact
  50. through electronic mail to prepare our agenda and appointments from country
  51. to country.  We also plan to install an individual modem connection to
  52. local research, commercial or fido network (or international to our
  53. university in Belgium).

  55. Thus we need your assistance in this project.

  76. Some people like to accomplish incredible challenges for going the whole
  77. way of their dreams.  Our challenge is to establish a communication line
  78. from 51=B0 lattitude North down to 35=B0 lattitude South, from Belgium to th=
  79. e
  80. Good Hope Cape.

  84. To accomplish the very ends of our dream, we have chosen to drive the
  85. zigzagging roads and trails and go at encounter the African continent.  The
  86. idea is to physically connect 30 countries together through our itinerary.
  87. We want to realise a global project independent from the moving political
  88. situations occurring among the neglected continent.  Following the rhythm
  89. of the encounters along the road, we will take the time to feel the
  90. relations between local people and their fragile environment.  Instead of
  91. flying to Africa in only a couple of hours, we prefer to experience its
  92. North-South transition in nature and culture.

  94. Communication technologies for building global African networks

  96. Beyond the challenge of the expedition, the main goal of the Gondwana
  97. project is to contribute to global networking in Africa to allow people to
  98. choose their development alternatives.  To achieve this objective, we will
  99. bring information and affordable computerised telecommunication tools right
  100. to African decision makers, scientists and field workers.  The selection of
  101. these key-people is in progress among international organisations,
  102. universities, research centres, NGO's and private companies involved in a
  103. sound developmental scheme.

  105. Communication by images via the media
  106. -------------------------------------
  107. =46ollowing the tracks of the two famous agricultural and botanical
  108. explorations of Dr. Homer L. Shantz, first in 1919 and secondly in 1956, we
  109. will rephotograph as many as possible the original sites; three series -
  110. separated by 37 years each - of the same picture from the same view point
  111. and angle to illustrate the evolution of the plant cover over two thirds of
  112. a century.
  113. Images will be the reflection of our travel emotions and our deep respect
  114. towards the beauty of nature and the culture of indigenous African life.
  115. Through the artist's eye, nature will become sculpture, and the unusual,
  116. evidence.
  117. This is the way we have chosen to diffuse Gondwana's values and messages.
  118. By establishing regular communication with our European partners along the
  119. trip, the media will indeed be able to make people share the on-going
  120. adventure and project results.
